Education Week is May 3-7 and Mental Health Week is May 3-9

The theme of Education Week is "Learning is a Journey". With the challenges of the pandemic, we can all say with a sigh that this school year has certainly been a journey. However, we are re-energized and filled with pride as we look at the way our students, staff, families and community members are working together to ensure continuity of learning.

While it is a coincidence that Education Week aligns with Mental Health Week in 2021, the two are perhaps more closely related this year than any other. As our students, staff and their families continue to deal with isolating, and moves from in-school to remote learning and back again, let’s make a pact to apply the theme of Mental Health Week 2021 to our own personal situations – #GetReal about how you feel. Now more than ever, we encourage you to reach out for help if you need it. Here are some safe places to turn to for help:

  • School Counsellors, Teachers and Principals
  • Friends and family
  • Kids Help Phone: Call 1-800-668-6868 or text 686868
  • Adults can receive help from Crisis Text Line Canada by also texting 686868

As part of Mental Health Week, on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, PWPSD schools will celebrate Hats On! for Mental Health Day.

On the first Wednesday in May, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Participating schools will relax their hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school. Schools may also provide a coordinated lesson on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illnesses.
