PWPSD receives $8,000 donation from Iceberg Tournament

Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) is extremely grateful for the generous donation received from the Iceberg Tournament for mental health resources across the Division.

The Iceberg Tournament, founded in 2017, aims to raise funds for and awareness of children’s mental health. The organization’s website says, “All tournament proceeds provide direct funding for mental health assessments. This has allowed children to receive ed-psych evaluations much faster than the typical wait time … as well as help with the cost which can be as high as $2,500 for one evaluation.”

PWPSD Assistant Superintendent Heather Putio says the donation is a great boost to the resources currently available to PWPSD students. “Current funding allows us to contract services from Peace Collaborative Services and provide counselling in our schools, but the needs are beyond the service we have available, which creates a waitlist for assessments. We know early intervention and being able to respond to a specific diagnosis is most impactful, so the donation from the Iceberg Tournament will increase the number of assessments we can complete.”

The annual Iceberg Tournament was put on hold during the height of the pandemic, but returned this April for its fifth year. To date, the organization has raised over $29,000 for children’s mental health.
